Three – Unit Bridge vs. Dental Implants

At Coast Dental Centre in Maple Ridge we have restored many patients’ smiles over the years. Replacing one or more missing teeth is a common oral health issue that we address at our office.     Missing teeth can impact a patient’s quality of life in a variety of ways. A patient may feel self conscious and hesitant to smile or speak in public. In addition, having a missing tooth may impact a patient’s ability to chew and eat properly.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available to replace missing teeth. Two common dental restorations are the dental implant and the three unit bridge. While both of these dental restorations serve to replace the missing tooth and bridge the gap between the remaining teeth, there are different benefits to both treatments.

A dental implant consists of a small titanium screw which is inserted into the jawbone where the root of the natural tooth used to be. A prosthetic tooth is custom created in a dental lab and is affixed to the titanium post. The prosthetic tooth is long lasting and durable, and is made to blend in seamlessly with the remaining teeth.

In a three-unit bridge, an artificial tooth is connected on each end to crowns. The crowns are placed over the neighboring teeth to hold the bridge in place. A three-unit bridge can be made of gold, porcelain, or porcelain fused-to-metal. If the neighbouring teeth are weakened due to damage or decay, a three-unit bridge may be the optimal choice, as the crowns will strengthen and protect those teeth in addition to holding the bridge in place.
