Veneers consist of tiny sheets of porcelain that are bonded onto the natural tooth to strengthen and improve the appearance of the tooth. If you have cracked, chipped or badly stained teeth, veneers may be an option to restore the look and function of your smile.
Veneers are generally about one millimeter thick, but a little bit of the enamel will likely have to be removed to make room for the veneer. In some cases, this may not be necessary, and the veneer can be placed directly onto the natural tooth. The veneer is then adhered to the top of the tooth.
Veneers are carefully crafted to mimic the appearance of natural teeth, and your dentist will take care to ensure that the veneer blends in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. Veneers may also be able to fix imperfections such as gaps between teeth and minor misalignments in some situations.
If you have minor issues with your teeth such as deep staining, gaps, cracks or unevenness, veneers may be a solution. Speak to your dentist about the available cosmetic treatments. Veneers are generally more cost effective and less invasive than crowns or implants.
If you and your dentist decide that veneers are right for you, it will likely be done in two visits. During the first visit, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth, and may even remove part of your enamel to make way for the veneer. The impressions will then be sent to a dental lab, where your veneers will be custom made for you. At your next visit the veneers will be applied to your teeth with a bonding agent.
If cared for properly, veneers can last for many years. Caring for your veneers is not much harder than caring for your natural teeth. Simply remember to brush and floss each day as you normally would. Use a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and a gentle brush. Staining foods and beverages such as red wine or coffee may cause some slight discoloration to the veneers.
