Many things can cause your teeth to be stained or discolored. Everyday things such as drinking coffee and tea can cause discoloration. Certain medications can contribute to this, as well as poor oral hygiene habits. Also, as we age, sometimes the teeth just lose their ‘whiteness’. Because of this, many people are wanting whiter teeth to enhance their appearance. Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a common cosmetic dental procedure. It is a non-invasive and fairly inexpensive treatment that can dramatically improve the look of your smile.

There are a number of way to safely and effectively whiten teeth. A popular method is using a home tooth whitening kit, available over the counter at most drug stores. While these systems may indeed work to brighten teeth, the results will only be temporary and generally will not be as dramatic as with a professional tooth whitening treatment at your dentist’s office. It’s important to note that any tooth-whitening treatment will not be permanent; a touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

At our office, we offer a system of tooth whitening that requires two visits and for the most part can be done at home. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays. At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
